Flight Mode
20.08 – 25.09.2020
Galerie Mikael Andersen would like to welcome you to the opening of Flight Mode with new works by German artist Fritz Bornstück on Thursday 20 August 2020, 5-7pm.
Fritz Bornstück’s new paintings and ceramic works for the exhibition at Galerie Mikael Andersen are concrete yet universal in their imagery. Mundane and nostalgic objects like an old gramophone or a trash hide in a variation of atemporal sceneries from coastal landscapes to tropical forests to classicist architecture. Undeniably playful, the motifs also possess an uncanny sense of abandonment that invites the viewer to get lost in the past, present and possible futures.
The French anthropologist, Claude Leví-Strauss used the term Bricolage to describe the ability to re-use available materials in order to solve new problems. Bornstück translate this into recollecting different materials from different sources, putting them together slowly in the studio by a process of painting and overpainting, rendering all colours, light, surface, and details from memory.
The artist’s decisions are very often made intuitively and frequently the painting itself takes the lead: Go and dig a hole here, pile something up over there, break a window, plant a tree on this heap of garbage; or make the decision to remove something by scraping it off or painting it over thickly. Each layer brings the painting into a new state and by looking close enough the process is all there, revealed and laid out for the viewer.
Fritz Bornstück (b. 1982) studied at the Universität der Künste, Berlin and his works can be found in the collection of Arken Museum, Denmark a.o.
