The title of the exhibition refers to the book of the same name by the Italian author Italo Calvino (in Italian: Il Castello dei Destini incrociati). The title of the novel directly references the exhibition’s first presentation, which, just like in Calvino’s book, took place in a castle where strangers met and shared their personal stories using tarot cards. The exhibition now presents works by Danish artist Anna Borgman and Morten Stræde in the gallery space at Bredgade 63.

In the book, Calvino uses the tarot cards as a system to create diversity in the narratives. The tarot system also functions as a structure that binds the stories together. This combination of the system’s ability to be both open and yet provide clear boundaries is one of the key inspirations for the exhibition.

The works in the exhibition emerge in the tension between a structural, semiotic framework and the individual narratives of the pieces. Just like the tarot cards in Calvino’s book, the works can be rearranged in various combinations, allowing new stories to emerge between the individual elements. The exhibition’s concept of a narrative system creates both openness and clear boundaries, which can be seen both in the relationship between Stræde’s and Borgman’s individual works, as well as in their differing approaches to their artistic practices.
