16.06 – 06.08.2011

SIGNE GUTTORMSEN, DORTE JELSTRUP, ASTRID KRUSE JENSEN, SOPHIA KALKAU, KARIN LORENTZEN, ELISABETH TOUBRO, KATHRINE ÆRTEBJERG

This year the French-American artist Louise Bourgeois would have turned 100 and on this occasion 7 contemporary artists celebrate her life and art in the exhibition BODY OF MEMORY. The participating artists are Signe Guttormsen, Astrid Kruse Jensen, Dorte Jelstrup, Sophia Kalkau, Karin Lorentzen, Elisabeth Toubro and Kathrine Ærtebjerg, who initiated the exhibition.  Louise Bourgeois is one of the most famous and significant artists of the 20th century, and she generally worked with her own life experience in her art. The 7 participating artists have each created one or more new works that are based on Louise Bourgeois' life and art. The works express the artists' own experiences, human density and body memories, or paraphrase Louise Bourgeois' works, contain a manifestation of her personality or capture an aesthetic expression of Bourgeois' oeuvre. The exhibition is centered on Louise Bourgeois but has a diverse expression since the inspiration is taken from Bourgeois' work, which spans most of the 20th century art - from Surrealism in the 1930s to installation art in the 1990s. The inspiration for the exhibition is also found in Bourgeois’ special and impressive ability to innovate but also to maintain an autobiographical essence, where her own complexity and own relations are manifested - the connection of art and life.
