Portraits of Artists

02.08 – 26.08.2001

In the exhibition Lars Schwander shows a series of portraits of artists he has taken from the middle of the eighties till today. From Björk and Leonard Cohen to Annie Leibovitz, Peter Greenaway and Roger Ballen. In between there are portraits of Günther Förg, Martin Kippenberger, Duane Michals, Helmut Newton, Yoko Ono, Cindy Sherman, Lawrence Weiner and many more. It may be famous artists, but the photographs are far more subtle. Lars Schwander takes photographs, and makes their characters appear.

Lars Schwander [*1957] is the founder and daily leader of Fotografisk Center in Copenhagen, and in addition he is connected to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art as well as Bruun Rasmussens Kunstauktioner. Moreover he has written a long series of books and catalogues about photographers, most recently the biography on Viggo Rivad. It is probably mostly in this role we know Lars Schwander, but he has sold his photographs earlier than - as well as parallel to - his writings. Hence he is represented in a long line of public and private collections, among others Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris), Musée de la Photographie (Charleroi), Det Kongelige Bibliotek, Museet for Fotokunst, Louis Vuitton Foundation (Paris), Lenono Photo Archive (New York), and recently in the great German art collection Olbricht Collection (Essen).

In connection to the exhibition a book with all the portraits from the exhibition is published: 'Portraits of Artists / Portraits d'Artists / Kunstnerportrætter'. 112 pages, richly illustrated with an essay by Lars Schwander. Forlaget Rhodos, International Science and Art Publishers. 75 copies with one signed original photography.
