Galerie Mikael Andersen would like to welcome you to the opening of Nachspiel, an exhibition featuring new works by German artist Fritz Bornstück, on Thursday 8 October 2026, 17:00-19:00.
Nachspiel is Bornstück’s ninth solo exhibition with the gallery and brings together recent works that explore the relationship between nature, everyday life and the objects that surround us. Animals, plants, people and figures, as well as fragments of contemporary life, appear together in unexpected and often surprising scenes.
Bornstück is fascinated by the familiar and by the way our perception changes when things are taken out of their usual context. Old technology, discarded objects and traces of human activity appear alongside lush vegetation and wildlife. Rather than telling a fixed story, the paintings leave space for the viewer to make connections and discover their own meanings.
As Hilka Dirks, the author of the catalogue text accompanying the exhibition, writes: “Yes, there are trumpet-playing mice, and a unicorn, but for the most part nothing here is actually impossible.” This sense of curiosity and wonder is central to Bornstück’s work. The ordinary becomes strange, while unexpected encounters begin to feel completely natural within his imagined worlds.
There is a playful quality to Bornstück’s work, combined with a sense of mystery. His paintings invite us to look closely at things we might otherwise overlook. Rich colours, bold compositions and tactile brushwork give the works a strong presence, while the attention to detail creates dense scenes that reveal more over time.
The exhibition is accompanied by a new catalogue, published in connection with Nachspiel. The exhibition also coincides with the unveiling of a new commission for Copenhagen City Court (Københavns Byret), reflecting Bornstück’s ongoing engagement with public and institutional spaces.
Bornstück has exhibited at institutions including Museum im Kleihues-Bau, Kornwestheim; Faaborg Museum, Denmark; Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin; and Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin.
