About

Jesper Christiansen has since the beginning of his career been associated with painting. He has been particularly concerned with surface in relation to perspective and the physical space itself in which a painting is placed. These concerns have become trademarks of his practice. In the 1980s Jesper Christiansen focused on the relationships between illusions and surfaces whilst producing formally simplistic presentations. He continued this theme, increasing in terms of formal complexity throughout the 1990s. In his latest works Jesper Christiansen uses works of literature as his point of departure for his very complex and reference filled paintings often in large scale. His works are very sensitive to both art history, music and literature whilst remaining both deeply intellectual and infectously playful. In 1988 Jesper Christiansen graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where he was a professor himself from 2002-2008. In 2013 his retrospective exhibition GO BACK was shown at Holstebro Kunstmuseum and Brandts consecutively.
