About

In her artistic practice, Kathrine Ærtebjerg concentrates on the narrative and figurative within painting. Her colourful and almost surrealist imaginative paintings often reflect on the idea of transformation as a necessary human condition and the works are played out on the border between the conscious and the unconscious, reality and fantasy, figuration and abstraction. Ærtebjerg’s enigmatic works place themselves somewhere in between; with their open interpretations and connotations they allow the viewer to explore the paintings’ complex and visually fascinating pictorial world drawing inspiration from both traditional fairy tales, modern and contemporary literature as well as feminist concepts and ideas. Kathrine Ærtebjerg graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 2002. Her works can be found in the collections of The Danish National Gallery, ARoS in Aarhus and KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces in Køge among others.
