About

Julia Oschatz works with a range of techniques and approaches in her often room sized installations that may include both painting, drawing, video, computer animation, sound etc. The theme of alienation from an environment we thought we knew is central in Julia Oschatz's works that often play with both the laws of physics and our notion of social habits and human psychology. In her works, a solitary figure is often placed in the central role performing experimental, clown-like actions as if there were no choice in the matter even, or especially when they appear to be flawed, harmful or ridiculous. Masking or obscuring the facial expressions produces a kind of neutrality, a figure not bound to meaning, a projection screen for the viewer. Julia Oschatz graduated from Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach in 1998 and also studied at Städleschule in Frankfurt, Myndlistaskólinn í Reykjavik, Iceland and École des Beaux-Arts in Bourges, France.
