About

The process of painting for Anholt is one of discovery and his imaginative works always contain traces of their production. Themes of journeying, of foreign places and otherness play a vital part in his works and his paintings very often have strong narrative elements. They are not, however, obvious acts of linear storytelling. Figures and objects appear and there are numerous visual references to art historical sources – from Hellenic antiquity and Persian miniature painting to European Romanticism and beyond – but they are largely subsumed within a greater import of the painting.
