Shara Hughes (b. 1981) paints imaginary spaces, her portrayals of interiors are furnished with a non-functional inner life – stairs lead to nowhere, chairs and tables are tumultuously arranged. Hughes uses wide-ranging materials, from sequins to glitter markers to wax crayons and sheets of plastic. The recognition of the influence of experience on the artistic process is particularly evident in Hughes' extensive quotation of the most canonized painters in art history. Hughes uses them as building material to create her spaces. While Hughes paints like Matisse one place, Bacon another or Hockney a third, the paintings never seam plagiarized. The variability in her expression seem to underline the conviction of the ongoing influence of experienceon the subject and the incontrovertible necessity of having seen to be able to paint. Shara Hughes studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. She lives and works in New York
